TOPAS – Oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump 

Possible incidents / problems / error messages:

Why does the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump not reach its final pressure?
Why does the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump take so long to evacuate?

The oil in the vacuum pump is contaminated (cloudy or brown).
– Change oil and exchange filter. See operating instructions

The check valve on the intake side no longer works properly
– Check spring tension, check O-ring fit, replace complete check valve if necessary

The the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump no longer sucks properly
– Possibly fitted vacuum filter is soiled/clogged
– Check valve no longer closes properly

There is oil in the intake line
– Check valve in suction flange defective

There is not enough vacuum pump oil in the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump.
– Fill in vacuum pump oil (observe oil quantity). See operating instructions.

The oil filter no longer filters properly
– Exchange oil filter and conduct oil change. See operating instructions

Oil mist emerges from the exhaust air side / is in the ambient air
– Replace the air/oil separator elements, if necessary, carry out a small service on the vacuum pump.
– For maintenance kit incl. oil, see operating instructions

The screen in the intake flange is contaminated
– Clean screen, do not let any contamination drop from the screen into the pump.
– If necessary, install a vacuum filter prior to the pump in order to separate coarse contamination upstream of the vacuum pump.

Why is the current consumption of the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump so high?

The vacuum pump oil is too viscous (thick)
– Oil change incl. small maintenance (exchange air separator elements as well as oil filter)

The counterpressure on the outlet side is too high
– Exchange air separator elements (excessively saturated)

The pre-installed vacuum filter is soiled
– Clean or exchange filter cartridge

Why does the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump not start?

The electric motor has not been connected correctly
– Observe operating instructions
– Observe connection instructions on the terminal box cover

The built-in motor circuit breaker has been triggered
– The motor circuit breaker value has been set too low

The capacitor (single-phase – alternating current) is defective
– Replace capacitor

The electric motor is defective
– Exchange motor, contact motor winder, if necessary

Why does the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump not turn anymore?

There is dirt in the pump
– Perform maintenance/service on the vacuum pump

The vanes are broken
– Exchange vanes and perform service on the vacuum pump

Corrosion has occurred due to moisture
– Perform service on the vacuum pump
– Avoid corrosion in vacuum pump (possibly by pre-running and post-running times, suitable vacuum filter/moisture separator)

Why does the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump not generate any vacuum even though the motor is running?

The coupling is defective
– Replace the coupling star or coupling sleeve, see operating manual

The vanes are stuck
– Aggressive substances were sucked in causing the vanes in the rotor to stick

Why does the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump generate loud noises?

Wrong direction of rotation of the electric motor
– Check direction of rotation, reverse motor polarity if necessary

There is not enough oil in the vacuum pump
– Observe minimum quantity, see operating instructions
– Fill in oil

There is the wrong oil in the vacuum pump
– For excessively thick (viscous) oil in the vacuum pump, see operating instructions

The bearings are defective
– Exchange bearings (also examine electric motor)

The coupling is defective
– Exchange coupling sleeve

Why does the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump get too hot?

There is insufficient cooling air supply
– Check cooling air supply to vacuum pump
– Vacuum pump cooler dirty?
– Fan propeller (also electric motor) defective

The ambient temperature is too high
– Observe operating instructions / operating data

The intake air is too hot
– Observe permissible intake temperature, see operating instructions

The oil filter is clogged, the oil is not cleaned properly
– Exchange oil filter and oil

The air/oil separators are clogged
– Replace air/oil separators, perform maintenance on vacuum pump if necessary.

There is not enough oil in the vacuum pump
– Check oil level and refill or change

Why does oil mist emerge from the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump?

The air/oil separators are clogged
– Replace air/oil separators, perform maintenance on vacuum pump if necessary.

The air/oil separators are not inserted correctly
– Check whether air/oil separators were installed correctly
– Check fit of the O-ring, exchange O-ring if necessary

The air/oil separators have burst or are damaged
– Exchange air/oil separators, perform maintenance on vacuum pump if necessary

Why does the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump smell/stink?

The air/oil separators are clogged
– Replace air/oil separators, perform maintenance on vacuum pump if necessary

The air/oil separators are not inserted correctly
– Check whether air/oil separators were installed correctly
– Check fit of the O-ring, exchange O-ring if necessary

The air/oil separators have burst or are damaged
– Exchange air/oil separators, perform maintenance on vacuum pump if necessary

Why does the side channel blower not reach the operating speed after switching on?

The mains voltage/frequency does not match the motor data
– Observe motor data

The cables are not connected properly to the motor terminal board
– Connect them correctly

Why is the possible differential pressure not reached?

The suction line / pressure line is not tight
– Check the lines connected as well as any upstream products

The diameter of suction line / pressure line is too small
– Select the appropriate suction/pressure line. Observe connection diameter

The suction line / pressure line is clogged
– Check suction / pressure line

The vacuum filter or inlet filter is dirty.
– Check filter cartridge and clean or replace if necessary

The relief valve is not adjusted properly
– Check the vacuum / pressure relief valve

The regulating valve not adjusted properly
– Check the regulating valve

The blower or the drive power selected is too small
– Use next larger size

Why is the side channel blower not running / working?

The electric motor is not connected correctly
– Observe operating instructions
– Observe the connection instructions in the terminal box cover

The motor circuit breaker has not been set correctly
– Check setting of the motor circuit breaker

The motor circuit breaker is triggered too quickly
– Use a motor circuit breaker with overload-dependent switch-off delay that takes into account the short-term overcurrent at start-up (version with short-circuit and overload release according to VDE 0660 Part 2 or IEC 947-4).

The blower is overloaded, i.e. the pressure difference is too high
– Enlarge the intake or discharge opening of the system supplied.
– Reduce line losses by using larger line diameters
– Eliminate bottlenecks in the line
– Limit pressure difference by retrofitting a relief valve (accessory)

The drive power is too low
– Use next larger size (separate exchange of motor not possible)

The capacitor (single-phase – alternating current) is defective
– Exchange capacitor

Why can’t the side channel blower be turned?
The side channel blower is blocked, what to do?

There is dirt in the blower
– Perform maintenance of the blower
– Remove dirt from the blower
– If necessary, equip with an appropriate filter.

Why does the side channel blower start up with great difficulty?
Why does the side channel blower make a lot of noise?

Wrong rotation direction of the electric motor
– Check direction of rotation, reverse motor polarity if necessary

The bearing is defective
– Exchange bearing

Why does the side channel blower get too hot?

There is insufficient cooling air supply

The impeller of the blower is tarnished
– Soiling in the blower chamber
– If necessary, install an appropriate filter

Why is the side channel blower so loud?

Disturbing discharge noise (vacuum pump) or intake noise (compressor)

Why does the dry-running rotary vane vacuum pump not suck correctly?

The intake filter is dirty
– Clean filter or replace if necessary

The suction line is too long or too narrow
– Check line cross section, eliminate bottlenecks

The vanes are worn or damages
– Replace vanes

There is a leakage on the suction side of the vacuum pump.
– Check suction line

Why is the dry-running rotary vane vacuum pump switched off by the motor circuit breaker?

The mains voltage/frequency applied does not match the motor data
– Check motor data

The motor circuit breaker has not been set correctly
– Check setting of the motor circuit breaker

The motor circuit breaker is triggered too quickly
– Use a motor circuit-breaker with overload-dependent switch-off delay that takes into account the short-term overcurrent at start-up (version with short-circuit and overload release according to VDE 0660 Part 2 or IEC 947-4).

The cable is not connected correctly to the motor terminal board or the connector
– Check connection or plug

The counterpressure on the outlet side is too high
– Check outlet air line, remove if necessary

The preinstalled vacuum filter is soiled
– Clean or exchange filter cartridge

– The motor circuit breaker value has been set too low

– Aggressive substances were sucked in causing the vanes in the rotor to stick

Why does the dry-running rotary vane vacuum pump get too hot?

There is insufficient cooling air supply
– Check cooling air supply to vacuum pump
– Vacuum pump cooler dirty?
– Fan propeller (also electric motor) defective
– Cooling air inlets and outlets must be at least 10 cm away from the nearest wall ( exiting cooling air must not be sucked in again).

The ambient temperature is too high
– The intake temperature must range between 5°C and 40°C

The intake air is too hot
– Observe permissible intake temperature, see operating instructions

Why does the dry-running rotary vane vacuum pump make an unusual noise?

The pump housing is worn (chatter marks)
– Repair by manufacturer or authorised workshop

The vacuum regulating valve (if present) “chatters”
– Replace valve
– Check spring tension

The vanes are damaged
– Replace vanes

The bearing is defective
– Exchange bearing
